Everything below was published by a source listed at the foot of this page. Grouping matters: 12 of these 14 lines are actual services and the rest are add-ons, plans or policy charges that should never be averaged together.

Market ranges: what everyone else charges

This table is market context, not a brand price list. It exists so you can tell whether a quote you have been given is typical, low or high for the U.S. in 2026.

National planning ranges. A quote outside these bands is not automatically wrong - check what is included before judging it.

The same service, four different markets

Location is generally the largest single variable. The national median for all-over single-process colour is $105; the same appointment can land near $74 in a small market and $184 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

The variables that move the number

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and ignore the four lines below it that end up setting the bill.

• Previous box dye or old highlights+$100–$400

  Corrective work is billed as its own service, not an add-on.

• Bond-builder additive+$20–$45

  Sold as protection on heavy lift; ask if it is optional.

• Toner or gloss to finish+$30–$60

  Almost always required on blonde work and rarely quoted upfront.

• How many levels of lift you need+$35–$150

  Going three or more levels lighter usually needs a second pass.

• Colourist tier+15–60%

  Master and director levels carry a fixed percentage uplift.

• Hair length below the shoulder+$20–$80

  More product, more foils and a longer processing window.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
5. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
6. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
7. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"

Finally: get the quote on paper. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

What the bill looks like at checkout

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $71 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

The rule of thumb: add approximately 44% to any menu price for all-over single-process colour to get your realistic out-the-door number.

Annual cost of ownership

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 6-7 weeks, this service costs about $1,008 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in practice. Deduct it if you track tips apart from service spend.

Before hunting a cheaper provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit a year is about $126 kept; two fewer is $252. Neither costs you any quality.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is normally a one-off larger amount.
• At a resort or hotel spa, check for an automatic service charge before adding a second gratuity on top.

What people get wrong here

These are the ones that generate complaints. Each is prevented by one question before the service starts.
