Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $165 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the exact figure in any one row.

What actually changes your price

Ask about these at booking, not at checkout. Each is easier to decline before you arrive than mid-appointment.

What standard facial costs you over a year

A single $110 appointment is easy to justify. Maintained every 6-7 weeks, standard facial becomes a $1,056 annual commitment at the national median — and that is the number worth deciding on.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The cheapest lever is almost always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 8 visits a year to 6 saves about $264 annually — generally more than switching salons would.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $110, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Cash gets to the provider quickest and is still preferred in most independent studios.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• A late-cancellation charge buys you nothing. It is not tipped.
