Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $108 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

The variables that move the number

All of these can be declined in the sense that you can refuse it — but only if you know it is coming in advance.

Twelve months of express facial, priced out

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 5 weeks, this service costs about $864 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 10 visits a year. Adjust the visit count and every figure here shifts with it.

Before hunting a less expensive provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit per year is about $86 kept; two fewer is $173. Neither costs you any quality.

Break-even points for monthly plans

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $72, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a second gratuity on top.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.

What to say on the phone

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
2. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
3. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
4. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
5. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
6. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
7. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.
