What unlimited tanning membership costs you over per year

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At billed monthly, this service costs about $540 a year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 12 visits per year. Every number here scales with that visit count.

Before hunting a reduction, check the cadence. Going from 12 to 10 visits a year keeps around $130 in your pocket at the same quality of work.

Is the monthly plan worth it?

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• If more than one person worked on you, check how gratuity is divided before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• Do not tip on membership dues, booth rent, deposits, annual fees, gift-card loads or cancellation charges — no service was performed.

Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is precisely why they are offered there.

1. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
4. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
5. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
6. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"
7. "What is the precise price for unlimited tanning membership at my hair length and density?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.
