None of these figures belongs to a brand on this page. They describe the wider market, which is what you need in order to judge a quote rather than just accept it.

Rent and wages flow straight into the menu. Applying published metro cost bands to the $110 national median for standard facial gives the following planning ranges.

Where the extra money goes

All of these can be declined in the sense that you can decline it — but only if you know it is coming before you are in the chair.

Twelve months of standard facial, priced out

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 6-7 weeks, this service costs about $1,056 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Cadence comes down to typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the largest variable.

Dropping one visit per year saves roughly $132. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $264. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a cheaper provider before you switch.

Membership break-even: the only maths that matters

A membership is worthwhile above one number: monthly fee ÷ per-visit price. Below that visit count you are subsidising the salon. At a $110 per-visit rate, here is where each plan level breaks even.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and check the maths on your quoted rate.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are hard to judge in the moment. These are the dollar amounts at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.

Mistakes that cost real money

What to say on the phone

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

1. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"
2. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
3. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
4. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
5. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"
6. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
7. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.
