What basic manicure costs in your metro tier

Location is usually the largest single variable. The national median for basic manicure is $33; the same appointment can land near $23 in a small market and $58 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Why your quote differs from the menu

Ask about these when you book, not at checkout. Every one of them is easier to decline before you arrive than once you are in the chair.

When a membership actually beats paying each visit

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your realistic monthly visit count × $33, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the convention is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• If more than one person worked on you, ask how tips are shared before assuming the lead provider receives all of it.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by norm - though rarely refused.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.

3. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"

5. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
6. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
7. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.

Assumes 17 visits a year. Adjust the visit count and every figure here shifts with it.

Dropping one visit a year saves approximately $40. Dropping the cadence by a quarter saves about $168. Compare that against what you would save by moving to a less expensive provider before you switch.
