The variables that move the number

Every one of these is optional in the sense that you can decline it — but only if you know it is coming before you are in the chair.

What the bill looks like at checkout

This is the gap that surprises people. Starting from a $81 base, here is where the money goes by the time the card is out.

Annual cost of ownership

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Express facial maintained every 5 weeks works out to approximately $864 annually once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is effectively compulsory. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a cheaper provider. Moving from 10 visits annually to 8 saves about $216 annually — typically more than switching salons would.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $72, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and check the maths on your quoted rate.

Tipping: the numbers rather than the etiquette

Percentages are awkward to compute at the counter. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.
• At a resort or hotel spa, look for a service charge already applied before adding a further gratuity.
• On a $72 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $1.44. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.

Mistakes that cost real money

These recur constantly in pricing disputes. Every one is avoided by asking once in advance rather than at checkout.

Exactly what to ask when you book

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

1. "What is the precise price for express facial at my hair length and density?"
2. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
3. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
4. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
5. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
6. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed separately?"

Then do one thing at checkout: ask for an itemised receipt. If a line appears that you were not told about, that is the moment to raise it — not after you have left.
