These 22 lines come from published sources and are grouped by what they actually are. Mixing a cancellation fee into a service price list is how misleading "average" figures get made, so they are separated here.

A price documented for one location does not establish a national rate. Check with the location you intend to book.

U.S. market ranges for comparison

Use this as a sanity check. Where a quote falls outside these bands, ask what is included before concluding it is poor value — scope differences explain most outliers.

The same service, four different markets

Location is usually the largest single variable. The national median for women's haircut is $69; the same appointment can land near $48 in a small market and $121 in a top-tier metro. That is a 2.5× spread on an identical service name.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the precise figure in any one row.

Ranking these matters. Most of us compares the headline price of two salons and skip past the four lines below it that end up setting the bill.

What to say on the phone

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is precisely why they are offered there.

1. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
2. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
3. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
4. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
5. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
6. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
7. "Is a shampoo, blow-dry or finish included in that price, or billed on a separate line?"

At checkout: check the itemised total against the quote before paying. Corrections are straightforward at the desk and nearly impossible afterwards.

The realistic total, worked through

Every line below is standard and expected. None of it is a scam — but almost none of it appears on the menu board either.

Plan for the total, not the base. The $14 gap between the two is the part people forget when comparing two salons.

What women's haircut costs you over a year

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Women's haircut maintained every 10 weeks works out to roughly $414 per year once gratuity is included.

Cadence reflects typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

Before hunting a less expensive provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit annually is about $83 kept; two fewer is $166. Neither costs you any quality.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are hard to judge in the moment. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the market range.

• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.
• Cash is the most direct route and is still preferred in most independent salons.
• An automatic service charge ought to be disclosed when you book. Spot one on the bill, ask whether it goes to the provider before adding more.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
