How much to tip on this service

Working out a percentage on the spot is a nuisance. Here they are converted to dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• At a resort or hotel spa, see whether a service charge is included before adding a further gratuity.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is generally a one-off larger amount.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.

The booking script, word for word

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

2. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
3. "What is the precise price for all-over single-process colour at my hair length and density?"
4. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
7. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"

Finally: get the quote in writing. A text or email costs the salon nothing and removes any argument at checkout.

From menu price to what you actually hand over

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $71 service does not cost $71.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 6-7 weeks, this service costs about $1,008 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Assumes 8 visits a year. Every number here scales with that visit count.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $105 median to the $65 budget end saves $384 a year, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.
