Where you live changes the price more than anything else

Before deciding a quote is high, check it against your own market rather than the national number. A $93 quote is expensive in a tier-4 market and unremarkable in tier 1.

Your own market may sit between tiers. The point is the 2.5x spread, not the exact figure in any one row.

What to say on the phone

Ask these at booking rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is precisely why they are offered there.

1. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
2. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
3. "What is the precise price for brazilian wax at my hair length and density?"
4. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

The sensible total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $24 service does not cost $24.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and calculate your own break-even.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a reduction or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are often tipped separately, usually a few dollars.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip per visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Cash gets to the provider quickest and is still preferred in most independent studios.

Worth comparing before you commit

Price is not usually the deciding factor. Line up the inclusions first — what is actually included — before you look at the figure.
