Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. The whole thing takes a minute or two and they are the gap between a quote and a surprise. The last one matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 4 weeks, this service costs about $671 per year including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Strip it out if you budget gratuity on a separate line.

The cheapest lever is nearly always stretching the cadence, not finding a less expensive provider. Moving from 13 visits annually to 10 saves about $168 annually — normally more than switching salons would.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• At a resort or hotel spa, see whether a service charge is included before adding a further gratuity.
• Holiday tipping is a separate norm from per-visit tipping and is normally a one-off larger amount.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
