Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Read these out. They take about ninety seconds and they are the difference between a quote and a surprise. The final question matters most — a written quote settles any dispute at checkout.

How much to tip on this service

Two rules do most of the work: tip on the service before tax, and tip the person who performed it.

• A no-show or late-cancellation fee is a penalty, not a service. It is not tipped.
• Assistants who shampoo or rinse are regularly tipped on a separate line, typically a few dollars.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• A tip is for the work performed, not for the price you were charged. Do not penalise a provider for a menu they did not set.
