Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is the reason they come up at that moment.

1. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
2. "If this runs longer than booked, does the price change?"
3. "What is the exact price for express facial at my hair length and density?"
4. "Which provider tier is that quote for, and what does the next tier up cost?"
5. "Is there a first-visit offer or a package rate I should know about?"
6. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
7. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

Most budgets break at the cadence, not the price. Express facial maintained every 5 weeks works out to roughly $864 a year once gratuity is included.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is expected rather than optional. Deduct it if you track tips apart from service spend.

Before hunting a cheaper provider, look at the interval. One fewer visit a year is about $86 kept; two fewer is $173. Neither costs you any quality.

When a membership actually beats paying per visit

The honest test is your realistic visit count, not your intended one. Most of us overestimate by 30–50%. Take the number below and check it against how you behaved last quarter.

What to tip, in actual dollars

Percentages are hard to judge in the moment. Below they are converted into actual dollars at the low, middle and high end of the national range.

• If the salon owner performed the service, tipping is optional by convention - though seldom refused.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.
• At a resort or hotel spa, check for an automatic service charge before adding a second gratuity on top.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
