Seven questions that prevent a surprise bill

You do not need to negotiate. You need the price to be stated before the service starts. These questions do that without any awkwardness.

1. "Do you take a deposit, and does it come off the final balance?"
2. "Are taxes added at checkout, and do you have a card-payment surcharge?"
3. "Can you email or text me the quote before my appointment?"
4. "If I join the membership today, is there an enrolment or annual fee on top?"
5. "Is removal of my existing product included, or is it a separate charge?"
6. "What add-ons do you normally recommend for this service, and what does each cost?"
7. "What is your cancellation window, and what is the charge if I miss it?"

And when you pay: read the itemised receipt line by line. Unexpected charges are nearly always fixable at the desk and almost never fixable later.

The sensible total, worked through

Work it forwards once and you will never be caught out again. A $591 service does not cost $591.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At full reset 3x per year, this service costs about $846 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Gratuity is included at 20% because it is not optional in reality. Remove it if you prefer to budget separately.

The lever most of us reach for - switching salons - is usually the weakest one. Moving from the $235 median to the $160 budget end saves $270 a year, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Is the monthly plan worthwhile?

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $235, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Excludes enrolment and annual fees. Add those before comparing plans over twelve months.

Use the quoted rate rather than the market one and run your own break-even.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Holiday tipping is a separate convention from per-visit tipping and is usually a one-off larger amount.
• On a package or prepaid series, tip each visit on the value of that visit rather than once on the whole package.
• Card tips may be pooled or delayed to the next pay run. Ask if you want it to reach one person directly.
• Tip the same on a redo as on the original if the redo was not the provider's fault - and speak to management rather than the provider if it was.

Five ways to overpay without noticing
