Ask these when you book rather than on arrival. Once you are gowned and in the chair, declining an add-on becomes socially much harder — which is exactly why that is when they are raised.

The real annual cost of keeping this up

The per-visit price hides the real decision. At every 5 months, this service costs about $1,950 annually including gratuity if you pay national median rates.

Cadence reflects typical maintenance intervals. Your own interval is the biggest variable.

The lever most people reach for - switching salons - is typically the weakest one. Moving from the $650 median to the $200 budget end saves $1,350 a year, but so does just stretching the interval by a quarter.

Break-even points for monthly plans

Ignore the marketing and do one division. If the plan costs more than your sensible monthly visit count × $650, it loses money. The table shows the crossover for common plan prices.

Gratuity, converted from percentages into money

Tip on the pre-tax service amount. If a discount or promotion applied, the norm is to tip on the original value of the work, not the discounted price.

• Missed-appointment charges are penalties rather than services. It is not tipped.
• On a $650 service, the gap between an 18% and a 20% tip is $13. It matters less than whether you tip at all.
